General Information

To be an ‘active member’ and moor a boat at the BMC facility, a member must be a permanent or occasional resident of a boat-only access location on the Hawkesbury River, or an owner of such a property, and have paid the required annual levy, (Rule 18).

There are 135 member shareholders and 73 mooring positions.

There is a large unmet demand for commuter mooring at Brooklyn, as a result of growth in river population and boat use. Whether and how the BMC can contribute to meeting any of this demand is an issue that is complicated by a number of factors. Any proposal to enlarge the current BMC facility would be considered a ‘designated development’ under State environmental protection and planning legislation. It could be difficult and costly to gain approval.

The BMC Board is continually looking at ways to improve the operation and management of the organisation, via adjustments to the Rules, implementation of policies and interaction with members.

To apply to become a member, please join the Waiting List. There are over 100 people on the waiting list so it may take many years before you are offered shares.  Over the last few years, there have been 5 to 7 members leaving each year.

Shares

There are three types of shares in the BMC

  • TP1 shares are owned by the original shareholders, issued when the Coop was formed in 1982. TP1 shares can be handed on only once, by bequest or purchase with the river property. When the shares are passed on, they become TP2 shares.
  • TP2 shares expire when the holder moves away from the river. The shares are repurchased by the BMC, and at that time become A class shares.
  • A Class shares were first issued in 1998 when the Coop expanded. When a shareholder moves away from the river, the shares are sold back to the Coop and A class shares are offered to a new member in the order shown on the waiting list.

Assignment of Mooring Rights

Members may apply to the board to assign their right to moor a boat at the BMC facility to another person.

Assignments are not automatic and are subject to individual decision by the board (rule 18A(f)). Such decisions will normally be made consistent with any relevant board policies. Any boat used by a member’s assignee must be an approved boat. The member is responsible for the conduct of the assignee. The current Board policy regarding assignments can be viewed by clicking on this link: Assignment_Policy_30_4_17
